IMSTA FESTA Expands Reach With 2018 Events in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia

Renowned Music Technology Event Will Make Its First 2018 Stop in Miami on Feb. 24

The International Music Software Trade Association (IMSTA) is expanding its acclaimed IMSTA FESTA music technology event in 2018 to include events not only in Canada, the United States, and Europe, but also in Asia. This year’s series of events will begin Feb. 24 with IMSTA FESTA Miami and continue on to Los Angeles (May); Seoul, Korea (June); Chicago (July); New York City (September); Toronto (October); and Berlin (October).

“IMSTA had its most successful year in 2017 with end-users’ increased engagement in the IMSTA FESTA Master Classes, Professional Panel Series, and Songwriting Competition in every city,” said Ray Williams, managing director at IMSTA. “We are thankful to our growing network of members and partners that support IMSTA and its mission. IMSTA FESTA promises to be better than ever in 2018, and we are excited about expanding into Asia and continuing our work to refine and enrich IMSTA FESTA programming.”

Free with registration, IMSTA FESTA events offer panels featuring prominent industry experts and exhibits of the latest and greatest music-making technologies, as well as master classes, professional song reviews, a custom earplug clinic hosted by GRAMMY’s MusiCares, and IMSTA’s renowned international song competition.

During IMSTA FESTA Miami, held at the SAE Institute Miami, the keynote address will be presented by Charles Dye, an award-winning film writer/director and a Grammy® Award-winning mixer/producer, whose work with Jon Bon Jovi, Shakira, Aerosmith, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Lauryn Hill, Julio Iglesias, Frank Sinatra, and Gloria Estefan has sold 90 million records worldwide.

IMSTA Professional Panel Series at IMSTA FESTA Miami will bring industry leaders together to offer their perspectives on music production and to discuss topics and techniques that can be of value to professional and semi-professional musicians, songwriters, music producers, audio engineers, and music students and educators.

During the day’s IMSTA Master Class sessions, full-time music professionals and experts from nearly two dozen of the industry’s top music production technology companies will offer technology demos and exhibitions.

Featured companies at IMSTA FESTA Miami include Acon Digital, Acoustica, Accusonus, Arturia, Bitwig, Blue Cat Audio, Celemony, FabFilter, FL Studio, Focusrite, IK Multimedia, Magix, Native Instruments, Novation, PreSonus, Reveal Sound, and U-HE. Music makers attending IMSTA FESTA Miami will be able to meet product specialists face to face and get hands-on experience with the latest music technologies. In addition to offering product-specific tips and techniques, exhibitors will provide prizes for hourly raffle giveaways.

MusiCares, established by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to provide industry members with a safety net of critical assistance, will host its popular hearing clinic and fit attendees for custom earplugs.

Live song reviews at IMSTA FESTA Miami will give attendees the chance to present their work — on a phone or music player — to experienced industry professionals from Warner Music for one-on-one appraisal. Exceptional songs are awarded a “wild card.” These wild card winners will be judged along with other regional entries for the 2018 IMSTA FESTA International Song Competition. The regional winner will move on in the competition, earning the chance to win a free trip to Santorini, Greece, to be part of a song camp at Black Rock Studios.

Sponsors of 2018 IMSTA FESTA events include Electronic Musician, Gearslutz.com Ltd, IK Multimedia, P&E Wing, NAMM, SAE Institute, Sound on Sound, Wall Street Communications, and Warner/Chappell Production Music.

New AES 144 - Milan/Italy

This May’s 144th International Audio Engineering Society Convention to cover the full spectrum of professional audio topics including 3D Audio, Sound Reinforcement, Sound for Cinema, Sound for VR, Multichannel Audio, Recording and Production and Room Acoustics

The Audio Engineering Society has announced the distinguished membership of the organizing committee for the 144th International AES Convention and Exposition, taking place in Milan, Italy, May 23–26 at the NH Hotel Milano Congress Centre. Embracing this year’s theme – “The Power of Sound” – the convention will be co-chaired by Alberto Pinto (Professor – CESMA, NUCT University, Stanford University) and Nadja Wallaszkovits (Chief Audio Engineer – Phonogrammarchiv, Austrian Academy of Sciences and AES President-Elect), who have assembled a team of leading audio professionals to organize the events and presentations for Europe’s largest professional audio education, networking and gear exhibition of the year.

“Throughout their 70-year history,” says Wallaskovits, “AES conventions have gathered the foremost minds in audio to educate and connect with attendees. AES Milan 2018 will carry on that tradition in Northern Italy – not only a wonderful locale, but also home to numerous prominent professional audio manufacturers.”

The all-volunteer committee is representative of the caliber of participants in the convention. The committee members are Workshop Co-chairs Natanya Ford (Senior Lecturer – The University of the West of England; AES Fellow) and Magdalena Piotrowska (Manager and Sound Engineer – Hear Candy Mastering; Post-doc – Gdansk University of Technnology), Papers Co-chairs Ville Pulkki (Tenure-track Assistant Professor – Aalto University; AES Fellow) and Sascha Spors (Professor – University of Rostock), Facilities Co-Chairs Marcello Mannini (Sound Engineer, Skeldon Società Cooperativa) and Layan Thornton (Senior Member – AES European Convention TPVR Team) and, as Advisor, Umberto Zanghieri (R&D Manager – Z Division, RCF). “This outstanding committee is developing four full days of content that will educate and enlighten convention attendees,” states Pinto. “For audio professionals looking to advance their knowledge and skills, for students and all others interested in the audio sciences and arts, AES Milan is an essential event.”

“AES Milan is offering Workshops and Tutorials from across the broad range of audio engineering specialties,” elaborates Piotrowska. Sessions will include 3D Audio, Sound Reinforcement, Sound for Cinema, Sound for VR, Multichannel Audio, Recording and Production and Room Acoustics. “Convention attendees can share and expand their audio knowledge from the fundamentals through to the latest technologies,” she furthers. “New media – AR and VR, game sound, immersive audio, mobile platforms – will be the focus of numerous sessions and panels, including the experience of 3D audio through a high-order ambisonics system with dance and electronica musical playback, among other genres – as well as the presentation of spatial audio production techniques used such as B-format processing and spatial microphone capture. The AES Milan technical program will cover the application of technology – such as live sound system optimization and mixing – as well as present panels and presentations focusing on the latest in topics such as audio processing and portable streaming audio.”

A mainstay of AES Conventions are Paper and Poster sessions, presenting the results of scholarly and commercial research covering all aspects of audio technology and including human perception of sound. Pulkki and Spors are heading the team of peer reviewers busy vetting the bountiful submissions for AES Milan 2018.

Students are also a major part of all AES Conventions. AES Milan is no exception, with student-oriented educational sessions and events that include student recording and design competitions, mentoring and a career and school fair.

The four-day technical program at AES Milan will run May 23 through 26, with the exposition taking place May 24 through 26. The technical program sessions include over 160 research paper presentations, covering the latest in audio research, technologies and techniques aimed at educating audio professionals and students, alike, while exemplifying the Convention theme: “The Power of Sound.”

The companion exposition will showcase leading manufacturers with the latest gear on-hand for demonstration and evaluation, along with educational presentations and panels taking place on the show floor. The expo will also feature dedicated demo rooms and other unique listening experiences, complementing the full schedule of special events and social opportunities going on throughout the show.

Make plans to join the AES in Milan and follow us online at aeseurope.com for the latest details about the technical program, exhibitors, registration, housing and more.

We're so excited to welcome PHILIPPE ZDAR (Phoenix, Franz Ferdinand, The Rapture, Pharrell Williams) for his first MWTM production seminar at STUDIOS LA FABRIQUE, in France, from JUNE 27 TO JULY 3, 2018 !

Philippe Zdar is one of a handful of French mixers and producers who has become famous outside of his home country. He was born Philippe Cerboneschi in eastern France, and in the late 1980s, when he just turned 17, he moved to Paris. He began his studio career there as a tea‑boy at Marcadet Studios, and gradually worked his way up to become a fully-fledged engineer. Around the time of his move to Paris, Zdar also met Hubert ‘Boom Bass’ Blanc‑Francard, with whom he worked on the first album by one of France’s leading rappers, MC Solaar, called Qui Seme le Vent Recolte le Tempo (1991). Zdar and Blanc-Francard went on to work with Solaar on several subsequent albums.

New Brighton Modular Meet

Brighton Modular Meet

Now in its sixth year, the annual Brighton Modular Meet returns to the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts.

Over the last five years modular synthesizers have become smaller and more accessible than ever before. With this has come a huge rise in their popularity and the scene continues to grow year on year.

The Brighton Modular Meet is one of the largest events of its kind in the UK and is host to synth DIY workshops, live performances, artist and developer talks and presentations; there will also be a free and open table-top meet led by industry experts and synth enthusiasts.

Visitors can see a wide range of audio and video modular synthesizers on show, from developers and manufacturers that range from small one-man-bands all the way up to large and long established companies, as well as synths designed and built by artists, musicians and DIY enthusiasts.

Bring your gear to the modular meet, and mingle with like-minded modular synth enthusiasts, developers, manufacturers and resellers.

New 2018 AES International Conference on Spatial Reproduction

2018 AES International Conference on Spatial Reproduction - Aesthetics and Science

Dates: August 7th-9th, 2018 (with pre-event on 6th)
Location: Tokyo, Japan

Many practical technologies have been developed in the area of spatial audio since the last international conference in Tokyo, AES International Conference on Spatial Audio —Sense the Sound of Space—, was held in 2010. We have managed to handle the technology and used it to create countless works since then. In the light of such technology-driven content creation, it may be the time to address ourselves to the aesthetics in audio production.

The committee is expecting discussions in the following topics:

How can the Spatial Audio technology contribute to music and other artistic productions?
What technologies and scientific knowledge are expected from musicians and the content creators?
What are the keys for connecting Science and Aesthetics in this area?
